Shows at the park and Greenhouse, Best of Bend winners are announced, and Costco has an opening date

Good morning, Bend! It's time to rain on your Friday morning—but a good rain, like a cooling overnight drizzle in August.

In today’s Bend Buzz:

  • 🏅 The winners are in

  • 🎭️ Theater takes over

  • 🍦 Bonta takes a hit

Let’s get to it.

🚧 Greenwood is open

The short construction project along Greenwood between 3rd and Wall is finished and, IMO, the new design is a huge upgrade. With better sightlines, no more squeezing next to parked cars while a bus is trying to run you off the road, a center turn lane, and better pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, I think this one should be a win.

🥇 The winners are in

The Source Weekly’s Annual Best of Bend winners were announced and honored at a party on Wednesday. The annual contest for who has the best social media presence (I kid, I kid) is a huge deal for local businesses around town, and the winners are well deserved.

BUSINESS HAPPENINGS

🍖 BBQ Popup at Neighbor Rotisserie

BBQ popup shop Flosa’s Barbecue is holding another service on Monday at Neighbor Rotisserie on Newport Ave. The last event was met with huge lines and sold out in under 3 hours, so get there early if you want to get your hands on some brisket and other fixin’s. 4 PM - Sold Out 1004 NW Newport Ave

🍦 Westside Bonta is temporarily closed 😢

Bonta Gelato’s new westside location has been a huge success so far for those who need a gelato fix but don’t want to deal with parking downtown (although, is it really any better around Galveston on a warm Friday evening 🤔). Sadly, that location will be closed for the foreseeable future as an impaired driver slammed into the front of the building and caused considerable damage.

🛒 The new Costco has an opening date

Shoppers at Costco have recently noticed a large banner hanging over the checkout lanes announcing that the new location will be opening on October 19th. So, if you haven’t yet had the pleasure of navigating through the new Highway 20 and 97 configurations, then you’ll be in for a real treat come fall.

LOCAL LOWDOWN

Friday

🎭️ Theater in the park: Theater in the Park kicks off with a two-night showing of MAMMA MIA! at the stage in Drake Park. Tickets have already sold out for both shows, but that doesn’t mean you can't float by on the river in hopes of catching a whiff of the sweet songs of ABBA in the air. 6 - 9 PM Drake Park

⚔️ Calling all Zelda fans: I’m not much of a gamer, but I did get sucked into playing Zelda: Breath of the Wild over the winter. So when I saw that IsoMiMo was hosting a Paint Your Own Korok night, it, of course, got my attention. If you’ve always dreamed of painting your own mythical forest dweller, then this event is for you. 6 - 8 PM 925 NW Wall St

🪴 Shows at the Greenhouse: The Greenhouse Caberet’s latest production kicks off on Friday evening with a showing of Proof by David Auburn. Shows run Thursday - Sunday through August 31st, so don’t wait like we did for MAMMA MIA! and miss out on tickets. 7:30 PM 1017 NE 2nd St

🎬️ Movies in the park: Mountain View Park gets its turn at hosting Movies at the Park with a showing of The Blue Beetle. This DC Comics superhero movie is rated PG-13, so it may be better suited for slightly older kids. 7 PM 1975 NE Providence Dr

B: If you’ve ever dreamed of competing in a bike park skills challenge (or if you’re like me and would never ever dream of doing something like that but would still dig watching), then head up to Mt. Bachelor for the Skills Park Throwdown. Riders can show off their best tricks and win prizes provided by GoPro, and watchers can grab a beer and enjoy the show. 11 AM - 12 PM Mt. Bachelor West Village

🧘‍♀️ Yoga on the lawn: Roming Yoga and Deschutes Brewery are teaming up for a free yoga on the lawn event. Bring your mat and a bottle of water to the Deschutes Brewery warehouse (that’s the one by the Amphitheater) and enjoy a yoga session under the sun. 9 - 10 AM 399 SW Shevlin Hixon Dr

Sunday

🏡 Hang out by the garden: If you’re looking to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon hanging out by the garden but don’t actually have a garden, then head over to Worthy Brewing. From 1 - 4 PM, you can purchase fresh produce from their garden, play lawn games, and enjoy $5 pints. 1 - 4 PM 495 NE Bellevue Dr

⚪️ Bingo for the beavers (and other wildlife, too): Think Wild is teaming up with Cascade Lakes Brewing for a night of Bingo fun. BEND OUTDOOR GUIDE

🥾 A new trail opens at Mount Bachelor

Mt. Bachelor is Bend’s go-to spot for downhill mountain biking, and now it offers a more chill option for folks looking to hike, trail run, or take a smoother route down the mountain on their bike.

The new Evergreen trail runs between the West Village area and Pine Marten Lodge and features 1,420 feet of elevation gain over its 4.5-mile length. With a wide and relatively flat surface, the trail will be a great way for families to hike down after riding up on the chairlift or for trail runners to get in some vert without dealing with toe-catching roots or rocks.

No pass is required to hike the trail, although uphill travel on mountain bikes is not allowed.
