Bend buys Bachelor?, food trucks on the move, and country comes to the city

Good morning, Bend! Welcome to September and back-to-school week. Congrats to everyone who survived the summer, and I’ll see all of you as we sit quietly in a coffee shop on Wednesday morning, enjoying some well-deserved peace and quiet. Also, consider buying your kid’s teacher a coffee after this week. They’ll probably need it.

⛷️ Crowdfunding Bachelor

A group from Bend is putting together an effort to bring Mt. Bachelor back into the hands of locals and away from corporate ownership. While talks are still in the early stages there is certainly a desire by many to see Bachelor return to its roots. Those interested in staying updated on the progress can email [email protected] to get added to their mailing list.

🛹 Back to School Scavenger Hunt

Boardhouse Bend, a local group working to build an indoor skate park in Bend, is hosting a back-to-school scavenger hunt around town this week. Follow @boardhousebend to get the hints and try your hand at winning some skateboarding gear.

🍗 Wonderland Chicken x Worthy collab

Over the weekend, Wonderland Chicken Co. announced on Instagram that they will launch a new collaboration with Worthy Brewing at Worthy’s downtown location that will feature…what else…fried chicken and beer. The space will also be hosting live music and has a planned opening date of October 1st.

🥪 Cotto is moving to the Podski

Cotto, the Italian street food truck, has closed up operations at The Ale Apothecary and will be reopening in a few weeks at The Podski. I’d say grab your last fried rice cheese balls while you can, but that ship has sailed, and you’ll just have to wait for them to reopen like the rest of us.

🪴 Happy hour in the garden: September is here, and that means it’s time for another happy hour in the garden at The Environmental Center. Stop by for an hour or two to do some weeding, fix up the center’s garden boxes, and make new friends over a frosty garden beverage. 4 - 6 PM 16 NW Kansas Ave

❓️Trivia night at Crosscut: Every other Tuesday evening, Crosscut Warming Hut turns into the place to be in Bend for the best trivia players in town. So round up your team and head on down for your chance to vanquish your rivals and win some free prizes. 6:30 - 8:30 PM 566 SW Mill View Way

🚵 Between Evergreens group mountain bike ride: Want to learn Bend’s mountain bike trails and make some new friends along the way? Then head over to Between Evergreens in NW Bend and tag along for their monthly group ride. All abilities are welcome. 5 - 7 PM 2843 NW Lolo Drive Ste 110

🥬 Downtown Bend farmers market: Last week’s early frost may have meant the abrupt end of some summer veggies (RIP cucumbers), but on the plus side, that means fall veggies are just around the corner (hello harvest salads). No matter the weather, there is still plenty to choose from at the farmers market, which continues on into October. 11 AM - 3 PM Brooks Alley

🍷 Wine and music at the Box Factory: Bend is home to no shortage of outstanding wine-tasting rooms, and come Wednesday, Beldsoe Family Wines will be the place to be. Olivia Harms will be providing live music, and guests will be enjoying some outstanding glasses of Syrah and Cab Sav. 4 PM 550 SW Industrial Way Ste 198

🧶 Build a fiber garden: Spend an evening with your creative and artsy friends at Freak’n Art as you design and build a community fiber art installation. No supplies are needed, although you’re welcome to bring scraps to donate. 5 - 7 PM 1265 NW Wall St

🚵‍♀️ Women of the dirt at Bachelor: Mt. Bachelor is hosting their last Women of the Dirt session of the summer, and this time, they’ll be tackling Redline. Make new friends, learn new skills from local coaches, and enjoy an evening on the trails for one last time this season. 4 - 7 PM West Village

🤠 Bend goes country: Calling all country fans - one of country music’s biggest acts, Jason Aldean, is making a stop at the Hayden Homes Amphitheater. Break out your favorite cowboy boots and enjoy some perfect September weather down by the river. 6:30 PM Hayden Homes Amphitheater

READERS CHIME IN

Thank you to everyone who responded to and commented on last week’s survey. As I suspected, a whopping 85% of the votes were for a smoke-free summer.

We most certainly concur with that assessment and have loved the reprieve that August gave us this year. Here’s to September continuing along that same path!

Over the holiday weekend, we took our 5 and 7-year-olds to Green Lakes (it was a proud dad moment seeing them hike 10 miles in a day), where we enjoyed smoke-free skies and milder-than-expected temperatures to go along with some of the best views in the high desert.
