TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Bend! We’re back from a quick excursion to the coast, where agates were found, whales were not found, and clam chowder was a side dish with nearly every meal.

In today’s Bend Buzz:

  • 🚧 New closure along Purcell

  • 💌 Love in a Letter launches

  • 🚵 Help save BendTrails.org

Let’s get to it.

— Derek Carlson & Emily Elaro

👗 Fashion tells us we always need something new, but every new piece comes with hidden waste and pollution long before it hits the rack. Meanwhile, perfectly good clothes are tossed aside, filling landfills or shipped across the globe in the name of “recycling.”

Clothing swaps offer a better way. Refresh your wardrobe without the waste, extend the life of what you already own, and be part of a culture that values reuse over constant consumption.

🌍 Earth Day Fair & Parade is back and better than ever! Due to the remodel of The Environmental Center, the Earth Day Fair will be at Alpenglow Park this year. Join us Saturday April 25th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for family fun, performances, earth crafts, and booths to explore. Wear your best Earth Day costume and participate in the parade, or simply enjoy the planet with us. See you there!

🚧 Purcell Closing Between Hwy 20 & Bear Creek

Sad news for folks who had gotten used to using the fancy new roundabout at Purcell and Bear Creek, as the stretch of Purcell Blvd between Highway 20 and the roundabout will be closed starting on March 30th. The road will be closed for approximately two months while private contractors do utility work for the new adjacent development (that’s the city’s way of tactfully saying “this one ain’t our fault”).

🚵‍♀ BendTrails is Shutting Down

If you’ve spent any amount of time exploring the area’s mountain bike trails, then you’ve likely spent at least a few hours on BendTrails.org checking out trail reports and browsing their amazing maps. I (and it sounds like many others) always assumed that the website was run by a local mountain bike organization like COTA, but it turns out that it was really a labor of love by some folks who just love mountain biking and keeping locals in the know. So it was quite the shock to read that, come June 1st, the website will be shutting down…unless they can find someone to take over the reins. So if you’re tech savvy and want to keep their work alive, drop them a line!

BUSINESS HAPPENINGS

💌 Love in a Letter: I’ve likely said this before, but one of my favorite parts of writing this newsletter (this is newsletter #233, so I had better like writing them!) is shining a little light on local folks building cool businesses. I never know when they’re gonna pop up, so this was a fun email to receive. Local artist Lindsey Loughry has launched Love in a Letter, a company sending personalized, mini letters. So if you want to send a special someone in your life a mini letter with a tiny wax seal, or your kid a letter from the tooth fairy, check them out!

🗝 Elk Vintage to open at the Old Mill: Local vintage shop Elk Vintage will be moving into the little red shed at the Old Mill later this spring. The shed dates back to the early days of the mill (back when the river was filled with logs rather than paddleboarders) and will be Elk Vintage’s permanent home starting May 1st.
