TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Bend! Stay safe out there this weekend! Fire danger in the Deschutes Forest has been upgraded to extreme, and hopefully, we can make it to at least July before the smoke starts to hit town.

In today’s Bend Buzz:

  • 🥟 Empanada cart opens

  • 🚲 Cascade Cycling Classic takes to downtown Bend

  • 🍛 Real Taste of India closes

Let’s get to it.

— Derek Carlson & Emily Elaro

We talk a lot about buying “eco-friendly.” But here’s the truth: anything new still requires natural resources to make. Even the most sustainable product has a footprint.

The Environmental Center’s Rethink Waste Project is helping make reuse cool again. Because rewearing your favorite outfits, refilling the same water bottle, or repurposing old jars is one of the most sustainable choices you can make. It saves money, reduces waste, and keeps perfectly good stuff out of the landfill.

New colors drop. New trends hit. But the planet benefits most when we simply use what we already have.

Curious how to build reuse into your everyday life?

🚴 Cascade Cycling Classic Criterium Comes to Downtown Bend

The Cascade Cycling Classic Criterium returns to downtown Bend on Sunday. If you’ve never been to the race, I highly recommend it, as cyclists reach speeds that really don’t seem possible with the course’s many twists and turns as it winds through downtown. If you’re looking to drive through downtown on Sunday, you’d best choose a different route, as most streets will be closed for the race.

📜 Moments That Made Us Exhibit Opens at Deschutes Historical Museum

As part of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence’s signing, the Deschutes Historical Museum is hosting a temporary exhibit that explores moments that have defined our history. The Moments that Made Us exhibit opens today and runs through November 16th.

🎨 Two Suns Art Opens A Little Free Art Library

Bend has no shortage of little free libraries for books, and last month we shared that Pomegranate Home had opened a flower and veggie seed library. Two Suns Art Studio is getting in on the action and has started a little free library just for art supplies. So swing by their Century Center location to drop off some extra supplies and maybe pick up something new for yourself.

📝 A Few Corrections from Wednesday’s Newsletter

After 267 newsletters, it looks like I made my first-ever error in Wednesday’s edition (reminders of any other previous errors will be immediately dismissed). A whole bunch of you were interested in checking out Pie Maison’s job posting, but I inadvertently linked to the wrong one. So, if you’re looking to join their team (or just wanted to see if you could learn a little more about a new pie shop opening soon), here’s the correct link.

Second (this one wasn’t an error, just an update), Bend Breakfast Burrito is pushing back the opening of their new cart at Roundabout Pub to June 24th. So you gotta wait an extra five days for those burritos, westsiders.

BUSINESS HAPPENINGS

🍛 Real Taste of India closes: Sad news for fans of Indian food, as Real Taste of India (they were the ones located at the old Shilo Inn property) has closed its doors for good. They had shared a while back that business had slowed down significantly since the hotel closed. We’ll certainly miss them!

🥟 Hot Lava Empanadas opens at Silver Moon: Big news for empanada fans as Hot Lava Empanadas is now officially open at Silver Moon Brewing. They’ll be open Wednesday - Saturday from 3 - 8 PM and Sunday from 10 AM - 8 PM.
