TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Bend! And we’re back from a quick trip over to Portland last week. Before the trip, we promised the kids we’d take them to the ice cream shop that’s showing up on everyone’s social media feeds (Cheese & Crack, in case anyone is wondering), where they put a tiny chocolate cowboy hat on top of soft serve, buuuuut they were out of the hats. All you parents out there can probably imagine how that went over after days of talking it up.

It was sad driving back on Saturday with columns of smoke rising seemingly everywhere across Central Oregon (we had left smack dab in the middle of the lightning storm on Wednesday). Hope everyone stays safe out there!

In today’s Bend Buzz:

  • 🗺 New site to help plan your summer recreation

  • 🤝 Volunteers needed at Shepherds House

  • 🎈 Your weekend preview (Balloons Over Bend is coming)

Let’s get to it.

— Derek Carlson & Emily Elaro

Lazy weekends and quick getaways pair well with a bunch of magazines! If you have a library card, you have free access to digital editions of thousands of magazines that you can download and read from anywhere. Visit the library’s website to browse everything from the popular to the obscure in every topic, from art and architecture to travel and outdoors.

Popular titles include Architectural Digest, Cook’s Illustrated, House Beautiful, National Geographic, The New Yorker, Outside, Popular Science, Rolling Stone, Us, and Vogue—explore them all. You’ll even find magazines for kids and teens. You can download an unlimited number of magazines for offline reading with the Libby app, or browse and read from a laptop or desktop computer. All you need is a library card, which is free for folks who live in Deschutes County!

🔥 Stay in the know with the smoke

Bend is home to some pretty crafty folks, as over these past two years we’ve shared locally built tools like a buy nothing app, a happy hour finder, and a mountain bike trail site. Well, here’s another to add to the list (and a timely one at that). SmokeRecon helps you avoid the smoke with your summer recreation plans, as it overlays current smoke maps over popular local recreation spots like mountain bike trailheads and the lakes. It even has a forward-looking forecast to help you avoid getting stuck in a cloud of smoke midway through your ride.

Bend’s newest Brazilian specialist, Kyrsten, just joined Rebel Wax Studio, and we’re looking for her next regulars. She has 10+ years of experience, 600+ 5‑star reviews, and was ranked #3 regionally at her last studio.

To welcome her to Bend, Bend Buzz readers can book a first‑time Brazilian wax for just $35 (new clients only). We’ve got morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend appointments, and we can get you in this week!

Rebel Wax Studio is Oregon’s go‑to spot for waxing. We train other waxers, use our very own pro‑grade Rebel Wax products, and our warehouse is also here in Bend.
