šŸŽØ The Open Arts Center celebrates its new home

A month or two ago, we shared the story of The Open Arts Center, a new creative space for artists, teens, and the community. At that time, they were raising funds to help secure their dream location off of Greenwood & 2nd. I’m happy to report that the funds have been raised and the location has officially been secured, thanks to the many amazing folks around Central Oregon. If you’d like to check out the space, meet the team behind The Open Arts Center, and learn about how you can help this fantastic organization going forward, they’re holding an open house on July 29th. It’s free to attend and you can RSVP here.

šŸŽŖ The fair comes to Madras

The Jefferson County Fair kicks off in Madras today and runs through Saturday. While it is a bit of a drive compared to the Deschutes County Fair, we think it’s worth the trip. Admission to the fair is free for everyone (although some activities, like the carnival and rodeo, do require some cash). That means more money to spend on all your classic fair food favorites.

If you’re holding out for the Deschutes County Fair, then you don’t have long to wait as it’ll be here in a week!

ā›ŗļø To have a little fun, we asked ChatGPT to roast Bend’s most popular summertime activities

Floating the Deschutes - Ah yes, nothing says "nature lover" like floating down the river on an air mattress, pounding White Claws, and drifting slowly past strangers who definitely didn't ask for your Bluetooth speaker's full volume EDM set.

Hiking Pilot Butte - Congratulations, you climbed a glorified hill next to a Safeway. And for your efforts? A stunning view of car dealerships, chain restaurants, and your ex's blue Subaru driving by.

Concerts at Hayden Homes Amphitheater - Pay $80 to stand behind someone’s 6-foot-tall boyfriend while drinking a $14 IPA you spilled on your flip-flop. Don’t forget your earplugs and parking rage.

Camping at Elk Lake - Because nothing says relaxation like hauling $1,200 worth of REI gear into mosquito territory just to pretend you're ā€œoff-gridā€ while still posting Instagram stories with perfect LTE.

Mountain Biking Phil’s Trail - Where "flowy singletrack" means dodging tourists on e-bikes and four-year-olds on striders. You’ll either get dusted by a Lycra dad named Brent or nearly run over a golden retriever named Mochi.

Renting a Paddleboard - Where you spend 45 minutes trying to stand, 15 minutes looking cool, and 30 minutes drifting into the reeds like a lost marsh creature. Worth every overpriced rental dollar.

Taking your dog to the river - It’s less ā€œromantic nature strollā€ and more ā€œchaos Olympics.ā€ Every retriever for a five-mile radius is there, and they all think your snack bag is for them.

BUSINESS HAPPENINGS

🦐 I ā¤ļø Ceviche opens at Goodlife Brewing: With Goodlife Brewing renovating their backyard area (Bend parents - make sure to check out the sweet playground structure they added), they’ve been able to bring in some new food options. One of which is a new food truck called I Heart Ceviche. We haven’t stopped by yet to try it out (they’ve been open for around two weeks now), but a cold Sweet As and bowl of ceviche sounds pretty darn tasty on these warm July days.

🐯 Tekka Tiger finds a permanent home: In other food news that I’m also a bit late to the game with - Southeast Asian street food spot Tekka Tiger is now set up at 212 NE Revere Ave (across the street from Blockbuster). Each week, they change their menu to feature dishes highlighting the flavors of Southeast Asia, accompanied by a selection of snacks, fruit-shaped ice cream, and beverages. We finally managed to stop by for lunch yesterday, and I can honestly say it’s one of my favorite meals I’ve had in a while.
