If you've lived in Bend for more than a week, you've undoubtedly heard that the high desert is home to more than 300 days of sunshine per year. While this claim may not be totally true, it is true that Bend is an excellent location to harness the sun's power and turn it into clean, renewable energy.

Our friends over at National Solar are the local experts in doing just that; the community even nominated them The Official Community Choice Awards for Best Solar Energy Company in Bend!

On top of that, National Solar isn't just some door-to-door sales company. They will handle everything from the estimate to the engineering to the installation of your solar array and battery storage system. And from September 8 - October 31, they are offering discounted pricing for all local Deschutes County, Jefferson County, and Crook County homeowners.

Visit National Solar or call 541-348-8450 to schedule your free estimate today.

🌧️ A very welcome rain

The arrival of rain this week was a very welcome sight for residents of Central Oregon. Fire managers reported that fire activity within the Little Lava Fire went from 100-foot flames to 1 to 2-foot flames which allowed them to begin containment and mop up activities within the fire boundary. Remember that extensive closures are still in effect throughout Deschutes National Forest and evacuation notices are constantly changing so check in before heading back home or out into the forest.

🎸 Bend Roots Revival

Bend Roots Revival, a free community music festival, kicks off on Friday with musical acts that span across genres from blues to bluegrass to R&B to rock and roll. The event takes place at stages at Silver Moon Brewing, Bunk + Brew, Deschutes Brewery Public House, and the Domino Room, all weekend long.

BUSINESS HAPPENINGS

A new bagel cart swung its doors open this week at Bend’s newest (I think that title still stands 🤔) food cart pod, Ponch’s Place. While they have been open all week, their grand opening celebration kicks off on Saturday with free samples, raffle prizes, and more.

Going forward the cart will be open Tues - Sat 6:30 AM to 2 PM.

Bend’s newest zero-proof cocktail bar opens this weekend at Palate Coffee. Swing by on Friday or Saturday for an evening of live music, herbal-infused zero-alcohol drinks, and tasty nibbles. Saturday & Sunday 5 - 10 PM 643 NW Colorado Ave

Localvore is hosting their 6th Annual Fall Harvest Feast on October 25th at the Hanai Community Center. In addition to a farm-to-table dinner with locally raised and grown meat and produce from Well Rooted Farms, the event will also feature a silent auction, dessert dash, and a costume contest. So put on your best scarecrow makeup and help raise money for Localvore as they strive to provide food security for Central Oregonians and support local farmers. Tickets are on for sale now.

BEND OUTDOOR REPORT

🔥 Be fire aware

This past week has been a tense one with fires bearing down on Sunriver and smoke smothering most of Central Oregon. This is a great time to remind yourself how to stay fire aware so you’ll be informed and know what to do if a wildfire threatens your home.

Here is some information from the state of Oregon on how to stay prepared during wildfire season.

Be Informed

Sign up for local emergency alerts and download a fire-tracking app like Watch Duty.

Have a Plan

Develop an Emergency Plan using this Evacuation Checklist as a guide. Identify evacuation routes from home, work, or school.

Make a Go-Kit

Assemble a go-kit of essential supplies for your health, safety and identification. Visit Ready.gov for recommended emergency kit items. Pack an easy-to-carry backpack or bag for each member of the family.

Pack the six P’s for evacuation

  1. People and pets (food, water, hygiene, sanitation, clothing and comfort items).

  2. Prescriptions (medications, eyeglasses, and medical devices).

  3. Phones, personal computers, hard drives or disks, and chargers.

  4. “Plastic” (ATM debit and credit cards) and cash.

  5. Papers and important documents (photo identification, birth certificates, social security cards, passports, visas, insurance policy, mortgage deed or rental agreement, medical records, banking or financial records).

  6. Pictures and other irreplaceable memorabilia.
